Catholic Belief - Papal Infallibility

Infallibility means that everything the pope says is true?
Don't bet on it. If the pope tells you which team will win the next World Series, keep your money in your pocket. He has no more insight into the outcome of sporting events than you or I do. And if he gives you a list of the best novels of all time, thank him profusely, but feel free to develop your own literary Top Forty. The pope is infallible, but he isn't a know-it-all. His charism of infallibility, which he enjoys as the successor to Peter, is strictly limited. Vatican I (1869-1870) taught and Vatican II (1962-1965) reaffirmed that the pope teaches infallibly when "he proclaims by a definitive act some doctrine of faith or morals." So states Vatican II's Dogmatic Constitution on the Church. Note the limitation: Papal infallibility extends only to matters of faith or morals-not to Church customs, not to sports, not to literature, not to most things of everyday life. And infallibility comes into play only when the pope "proclaims by a definitive act." This means a formal, public statement. An offhand comment over lunch doesn't count. By the way, infallibility isn't limited to the pope or to papal decrees. The bishops, when united with the pope in an ecumenical council, also teach infallibly on matters of faith or morals. There have been twenty-one ecumenical councils, and most of them have issued doctrinal or moral decrees. Those decrees are infallible. Many councils have issued disciplinary decrees also, but those decrees are not infallible because they do not concern directly matters of faith or morals. There is a third mode of infallibility. The pope and the bishops don't have to meet in a council to teach without error. The Holy Spirit guarantees they will teach truly whenever they reiterate what the Church always has taught. The Church always has taught the historical reality of the resurrection, for example, and an individual bishop teaches infallibly when he reiterates this teaching.

Comments from McKinley Curtis III, Grand Knight 8495:
Good evening and please congratulate Don Declue (PGK/FDD) on his selection as Knight of the Year and our Worthy District Deputy Tim McCarthy as District Deputy of the Year!  This honor was bestowed on both men during our State Convention this past weekend as they received this award from our State Deputy Mark McMullen for the 2016-2017 Fraternal Year.  In addition our State Deputy Mark McMullen also bestowed on PGK Richard Capozzoli and his wife the Family of the Year for the 2016-2017 Fraternal Year.  PGK Richard Capozzoli is from our Fort Gordon Chapter (St. Michael the Archangel Council 14773).  It was quite an evening with three top honors from District 24.  I’m sure GK Brian Musha from St. Michael the Archangel Council 14773 is equally honored as it was one team from Augusta that captured the top honors.  Our Council (8495) also received third Runner Up in the Community Activity Program for our submission for the Rosary in honor of Roe v Wade Saturday Jan 21 and Sunday Jan 22 after all masses in the day chapel to stop abortion.  All should be commended and I’m thrilled to have witnessed and been a part of the Convention this year as a delegate representing Council 8495.  Again, when you see PGK/FDD Don DeClue our Membership Director and our Worthy District Deputy Tim McCarthy please congratulate these two Brother Knights! For those that personally know PGK Richard Capozzoli from our Fort Gordon Chapter (St. Michael the Archangel Council 14773) please congratulate him and his family as well!
